The complex [Et_4N]_3[Mo_3(CO)_9(OMe)_3] (1) has been synthesized by adding the photochemi-cally generated Mo(CO)_5THF adduct to a 6-fold excess of Et_4NOH in methanol.Complex 1 has been shown to undergo ligand exchange reactions at room temperature in the presence of alcohols more acidic than methanol,yielding binuclear complexes [Et_4N]_3[Mo_2(CO)_6(OR)_3] or trinuclear complexes [Et_4N]_3[Mo_3(CO)_9(OR)_3] depending on the alcohol used.The exchanges for the aromatic alcohols 4-aminophenol (2),3-hydroxypyridine (3),3-cyanophenol (4),and 4-cyanophenol (5) and the diols ethylene glycol (6) and 1,3-propanediol (7) were studied.These complexes have been characterized by infrared and ~1H and ~(13)C NMR spectroscopy.Complexes 1,2,5,and 6 were also structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography.
