Influence of seedling age and plant density on the performance of rice

Results of the experiment conducted during the wet season of 1994 and 1995 to study the effect of age of seedlings and plant density on the yield of rice variety Norin-18 at Iroisemba, Imphal revealed that at all the ages of seedlings, the highest grain yield was associated with the closest spacing (20 X 10 cm). Twenty seven day-old seedling produced the highest grain yield of 5.18 and 6.04 t ha~(-1) in 1994 and 1995, respectively. There was a trend of reduction in grain yield with the advancing ageof the seedlings.
