Utilization of paper mill effluent for rice production

The impact of paper mill effluent irrigation in combination with farmyard manure, composted coir waste, pressmud [filter cake] and limestone on rice production was studied in neutral and acid soils of Thambirabarani river tract. Effluent was raw, clarified or diluted. Irrigation with all effluent treatments decreased yield compared with irrigation with good quality water, particularly in neutral soil. Undiluted clarified effluent gave the lowest yields in both soil types, with 50% diluted clarifiedeffluent the best treatment after good quality water. Soil amendments did not significantly affect grain yield.
