Stability of cytoplasmic male sterile lines in rice

Twenty CMS lines were evaluated in two seasons (rabi 1995 and kharif 1996) and observed for pollen/spikelet sterility and other biometrical characters. During rabi 1995, all the CMS lines recorded 100% pollen/spikelet sterility, except IR 64608A, IR68275A, IR 68889A and IR 68280A which were observed with few stained pollen grains and set few seeds on selfed panicles. All the CMS lines had complete pollen sterility and set no seed on bagged panicles during kharif 1996. The variation in the pollen/spikelet sterility of these CMS lines in the seasons under study may possibly be because of (i) different seed source or (ii) environmental influence. The CMS lines IR 67684A, IR 68888A, IR 68890A, IR68279A, IR 68897A, IR 66707A, COMS 8A, COMS 9A, COMS 10A, PMS 3A and PMS 10A had a semi-dwarf habit, mid-early duration, better panicle exsertion and were stable for pollen/spikelet sterility are thus worthy of exploitation in hybrid rice breeding.
