Bio-efficacy of fipronil 0.4G against insect pests of rice

Field experiments carried out at Bhubaneswar during kharif 1998 and 1999 demonstrated superiority of fipronil 0.4G applied at 30 days after transplanting @ 0.05 and 0.075 kg a.i. ha~(-1) over carbofuran 3G @ 1.0 kg a.i. ha~(-1) and phorate 10G@ 1.25 kg a.i. ha~(-1) in controlling stem borer, Scirpophaga incertulas, brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens and leaf folder, Cnaphalocrocls medinalis infesting rice. Spider population in fipronil treated plots was on par with that of control. From the pointof effective insect control, safety to spiders and increased grain yield, fipronil @ 0.075 and 0.05 kg a.i. ha~(-1) were found better than carbofuran and phorate.
