Parental, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 generations of seven crosses involving eight rice cultivars were studied for panicle length, number of primary branches/panicle, number of grains/panicle, weight of grains/panicle and 1000-grain weight. A simple three-parameter model was adequate to account for the variability in panicle length, number of primary branches/panicle and weight of grains/panicle in the majority of crosses. Among the digenic interaction models, the six parameter model was found to be adequate to explain the variability for number of grains/panicle and 1000-grain weight in most of the crosses. All the digenic interactions showed duplicate type of epistasis. The predominance of additive gene effects and additive X additive interactions indicated that improvement may be brought about via selection.
