An experiment was conducted during 1992 and 1993 to study the effects of staggered planting and N levels on yield and yield components of sail (lowland winter) rice, Delayed planting on 15 September of 55 days old seedlings recorded comparable yield (3.11 ha~(-1)) in 1992 and significantly higher yield (4.51 ha~(-1)) in 1993 than normal planting (25 August) of 35 days old seedlings when N was applied at 60 kg ha~(-1). 60 kg ha~(-1) N increased panicle number markedly in 1992, significantly in 1993 and increased grains panicle~(-1) substantially. Significantly lesser grain yield in case of delayed planting (25 September) of 65 days old seedlings was associated with significantly lesser thousand grain weight and considerable decrease of filled grainspanicle~(-1).
