A field experiment was conducted at Bhubaneswar during the dry season of 1992 and 1993 to study the effect of different water management practices on rice (cv. Sarathi), taking six irrigation schedules on a sandy loam soil of medium fertility. The highest mean grain and straw yields of 4.30 and 6.29 t ha~(-1), respectively, were obtained by subjecting the crop to submergence of 5 ±2 cm during tillering and reproductive stages with 7 cm irrigation a day after disappearance of ponded water during restof the period. This treatment also recorded the highest net profit of Rs.7453 ha~(-1), benefit: cost ratio of 2.16 and the removal of N, Pand K (98, 51 and 144 kg ha~(-1)). However, the water use efficiency was the lowest in this treatment.
