Thirty hybrids generated from crossing three lines with 10 testers were studied along with the parents for combining ability for days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, flag leaf length, panicle length, number of ear bearing tillers plant-1, per cent pollen sterility, number of spikelets panicle-1, number of filled spikelets panicle-1, grain yield plant-1 and harvest index. Among the male parental lines, the NDR 358 appeared, as a whole, the best general combiner for all the traits,except days to 50% flowering and plant height. Jhona 349 was the best general combiner for earliness. The female line IR 58025A was a good general combiner for grain yield plant-1 and its major components. The most promising specific combinations were IR62829A X IET 13610, IR 58025A X IET 13303, IR 62829A X IET 13386, PMS 3A X NDR 359 and PMS 3A x NDR 358 for grain yield plant-1.
