Direct and residual value of several organic wastes for rice-rice cropping system.

Field experiments conducted at Killikulam, Tamil Nadu in 1993-94 investigated the effects of the organic wastes FYM, composted coirpith, raw coirpith, composted sugarcane trash, raw sugarcane trash, pressmud [filter cake] and green leaf manure withgraded levels of N (0, 50, 75 and 100 kg N ha-1) in lowland rice. The fertilizers were applied in the kharif [monsoon] season, and residual effects determined in the rabi [winter] season. The rice grain yield was highest with 50 kg N ha-1 + green leaf manure (Sesbania aculeata) or composted coirpith application in both direct and residual seasons. The N use efficiency was maximum at the lowest N rate. Among the organic fertilizers, apparent N recovery was highest from composted sugarcane trash, with high recovery also from FYM in the residual season.
