Three cold-tolerant japonica rice varieties as female parents were crossed with four indica varieties. F1 seedlings were successfully developed by in vitro culturing of 8-10-day-old immature embryos on MS medium supplemented with 0.25 mg 2,4-D/litre. Embryogenesis and plantlet regeneration occurred on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg kinetin/litre. Lateral tillers developed from regenerated plantlets, and nodal segments from in vitro-derived tillers were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg kinetin/litre or 0.25 mg BAP [benzyladenine]/litre to produce more plantlets. F2 seedlings were transferred to potting compost and grown to maturity.
