Callus was induced from mature seed and immature embryo of five indica varieties viz., Jay a, Pusa Basmati 1, Basmati 37-0, PR 106, and PR 110. Dark condition induced better callus ing. The medium MS+2.4-D (2.0 mg l~(-1)) + kin (0.5mg l~(-1)) was theoptimum combination for callus induction. The effect of variety (5%) and media (1%) was significant where as interaction between variety x media was non-significant for callusing. In four varieties viz., Pusa Basmati 1, Basmati 370, Jaya and PR 106, when60 days and 150 days old embryogenic calli were transferred to regeneration media viz., MS + BAP (1.0 mg l~(-1)) +Kin (1.0 mg l~(-1)) + NAA (0.1mg l~(-1)) and MS + BAP (2.0 mg l~(-1))+ NAA (0.1mg l~(-1)), green islets were formed. Maximum of 57.14 per cent calli exhibited green islets formation in Jaya on medium MS + BAP (1.0 mg l~(-1)) +Kin (1.0mg l~(-1)) + NAA (0.1mg l~(-1)). It was found that the effect of variety was highly significant (1 % level) for regeneration ability whereas the interaction ofvariety x age of callus was significant at 5% level. The effects of media and callus age were non-significant. The regenerated shoots after rooting were transferred to pots and grown up to maturity.
