Fourteen geographically same upland traditional rice varieties of 95 days duration evaluated in terai climate showed limited but significant yield potential ranging from 1.22 lo 2.00 t ha~(-1) with a mean harvest index of 0.42. The varieties having long grain filling period (35 days) and dwarf to semi dwarf in plant stature. Varieties were of low ear bearing capacity (236 to 313 effective tillers m~(-2)), short panieles coupled with small number of grains and less panicle weight. Significant positive correlations were observed for grain filling period, effective tillers, panicle length and harvest index with yield. Harvest index exerted maximum direct effects on grain yield and also indirect effects through effective tillers, grain filling period,panicle weight and number of grains panicle~(-1). High coefficient of variation was observed in chaffs panicle~(-1), followed by grain number, effective tillers and days to 50 percent flowering.
