Gene effects for panicle exsertion in rainfed upland rice

Generation mean analysis was used to characterise gene effects for panicle exsertion using P_1, P_2, F_1, F_2 and F_3 generation of two crosses viz., Khaolo 33 / Kalinga III and ITA 257 / RR 215-2. Non allelic interactions were important in the inheritance of this trait. Dominance gene elects were larger than additive effects in both the crosses. However, additive X additive interaction predominantly governed panicle exsertion. The number of effective factor pairs controlling panicle exsertion was 0.15 and 0.33 respectively, in the cross ITA 257 / RR 215-2 and Khaolo 33 / Kalinga III, thereby suggesting polygenic control. Biparental mating and/or reciprocal recurrent selection would be ideal to improve this character.
