Genetic diversity among improved cultivars of rice was evaluated using Discriminant Function Index. The present study indicated that genetic diversity exists for yield and its components among improved cultivars of rice and this can be very efficiently used to exploit heterosis in rice. Presence of adequate genetic diversity in any plant species is a major prerequisite for genetic improvement of the concerned species through breeding programme. Wide genetic diversity among the improved cultivars of any crop species is very useful for their further utilization in breeding programmes to achieve yield grains. In this study the genetic diversity among the improved cultivars of rice was determined using paired analysis by discriminant function (Srivastava and Carter, 1983).
