Nutrient management for rainfed lowland rice and its effect on succeeding lentil crop

Field experiments were conducted at the Crop Research Station, Ghaghraghat during wet (June-November) and dry (December-April) seasons of 1995-98 to study the effect of different nutrient management practices on the yields of rice and succeeding lentil crop, nutrient (NPK) uptake and soil fertility under lowland situations. Combined application of 50% recommended NPK + farmyard manure (FYM; 10 t ha~(-1) in shallow lowland and 8 t ha~(-1) in semi-deep water) gave the highest grain yield and nutrient uptake by rice in both shallow lowland and semi-deep water situations. Grain yield of lentil was the highest with the FYM alone applied to rice crop, which was closely followed by the treatment receiving 50% NPK + FYM. Rice equivalent yield of lentil andagronomic efficiency were the highest in the latter treatment, followed by control release nitrogen (CRN) + PK treatment in both shallow lowland and semi-deep water situations. However, application of the FYM alone to rice crop resulted in the highest nutrient uptake by succeeding lentil crop. Available N and P and organic C contents of the soil in all the situations were increased significantly due to application of the FYM, either alone or in combination with NPK fertilizers.
