Comparison of isolates of sheath rot pathogen. (Sarocladium oryzae)

Seven isolates of Sarocladium oryzae obtained from different rice growing areas in the country varied in colony characters, sporulation and toxin production. One of the isolates, RPM, did not produce toxin. The partially purified culture filtrates profoundly reduced the radicle length of uniformly pre-germinated TN 1 seeds. Mitotic index of the root tip cells was greatly reduced by the culture filtrates of all the isolates, barring RPM. A higher percentage of aberrant cells was observed in anaphasein case of RNR and CUE isolates. Isolates KJT and CBE were comparatively more virulent on two cultivars viz. TN 1 and ER 64. RPM isolate, which did not produce toxin, was also pathogenic to both the cultivars.
