Collection and characterisation of rice genetic resources from Keonjhar district of Orissa

Exploration and collection of rice germplasm is one of the mandate's of the Central Rice Research Institute. Since its inception, several explorations to different regions of the country have been conducted by CRRI, Cuttack and a huge genetic stock has been conserved in its Gene Bank. 120 traditional varieties/landraces were collected from the Keonjhar district of Orissa. These varieties were conserved in the medium term storage after being multiplied in the field during 1995. These rices were characterised for its morpho-agronomic traits. The associated flora of the rice ecosystem in terms of wild/weedy species was also made in the survey.
