Farmers participatory trials were conducted during rainy seasons of 1990 and 1991 in the bunded upland ecosystem of village Palsipani (Kalahandi) of Orissa to evaluate suitable promising early rices and their response to two levels of N (0 and 45 kg ha~(-1) It was observed that the varieties 'Pathara', 'CR 666-78' and 'Banaprabha' proved their stability and superiority resulting in 98, 74 and 63% hIgher yields, respectively over local check (Sathika) and won the confidence of Kalahandi upland farmers. There was minimal risk of terminal drought by growing these cultivars. Application of a moderate dose of N (45 kg ha~9-1) )increased the grain yield by 180 to 262%, mainly due to improvement in yield attributes like number of panicles m~(-2) , panicle weight, number of fertile grains panicle~(-1) and 1000-grain weight, compared to no 'N' application.
