Anther derived embryogenesis and green plant regeneration frequencies of nine indica rice varieties were studied. After cold pretreatment for 8 days at 11 ± 1deg C, anthers were cultured on N6 medium supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of growth regulators. The callus induction frequency varied from 0.32 to 12.27% and the green plant regeneration frequency from 0 to 26.86%, depending upon the genotype used. Of the nine varieties tested, green regenerants were produced in considerable numbers in only three cultivars (Basmati-370, Tulsi and Tetep); in the remaining six varieties only albino plants were produced. The time required for callus induction varied from 30 to 90 days after the start of anther culture, depending on the constituents of the media and genotype used.
