Effect of surface drainage on yield of rice in canal command areas

The effect of surface drainage on yield and economics of rice cultivation at Hariharjore canal command of Sonepur district in Western Orissa was studied. Treatments consisted of provision of surface drains and no drain (farmer's practice) in an ill drained field having scope for drainage. The study revealed that provision of surface drains brought about an yield improvement of 24% on an average, irrespective of seasons and cultivars tried. There was no significant difference between drains spaced at10 m and 15 m intervals. However, the drains spaced at 15 m interval resulted in producing highest yield of 4.21, 5.21 and 4.46 t ha' during wet 2001, dry 2002 and wet 2002, respectively which were 22.0, 25.6 and 30.7% more than that obtained with farmers practice, respectively. The economic analysis of the drainage system revealed that the cost: benefit was 1:4.32 for 15 m drain spacing which was highest of all the treatments.
