Fifty rice genotypes of different eco-geographical origin were evaluated for their ratoon performance during wet season 1999-2000 to assess the genetic variability present among them. Morphological characters of the ratoon crop exhibited high geneticvariability. The phenotypic coefficients of variation (PCV), genotypic coefficients of variation (GCV), heritability and genetic gain were high in the ratoon crop for most of the characters studied. Among the fifty genotypes used, only twenty four exhibited regrowing ability and genotypes viz., CO 43, IR 20, White Ponni, Ponmani and Mangala Mahsuri showed better ratoon performance as compared to the others. They recorded one third of the main crop yield.
