An American U-2 high-altitude spy planewas shot down over the Soviet Union, butpilot Francis Gary Powers survived. Badfeelings over the incident led to the col-lapse of summit talks in Paris when Sovietleader Nikita Khrushchev left the gather-ing on May 16. OSA's 1960 President,James G. Baker, designed the optics andmost of the cameras flown on the U-2.
