Abnormal deep retinal capillary networking and microaneurysms in the outer nuclear layer of diabetic eyes

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of legal blindness in several countries. In DR, breakdown of the inner blood-retinal barrier, with leakage of plasma from small blood vessels, is responsible for the swelling of central retina and development of diabetic macular edema (DME). However, different pathophysio-logic mechanisms may be involved in the development of DME, and they are believed to be associated with the various therapeutic responses and prognosis.
