We analyze the conditions of high energy efficiency saturable-gain degenerate four-wave mixing process with orthogonally-polarized pump beams in a Nd:YAG amplifier at 1.06 mu m. Due to the laser amplification, it is demonstrated theoretically that such an interaction can extract more energy into the phase-conjugate beam than the total input energy of the incident beams. We show the influence of the input energy fluences and the amplification of the two writing beams on the gain-grating profile. Experimental efficiency and reflectivity up to 40% and 300%, respectively, are obtained using two in-line flash-lamp pumped Nd:YAG amplifiers. [References: 16]
