Demonstration of sol-gel based distributed Bragg reflector lasers

We report on the development of a new composition of organoaluminosilicate sol-gel material and on the design and fabrication of Bragg reflectors and demonstration of external cavity distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser. The material is found very attractive for the fabrication of high quality channel waveguides, which in this study exhibit a total loss of ~ 0.2 dB/cm at 1550 nm. The Bragg reflectors are studied by a tunable laser, almost 96% filtering around the designed wavelength (1530 nm) and a full width half maximum (FWHM) of ~ 7.5 A are observed. Both filtering and bandwidth are found in good agreement with their theoretical calculations. Reflectors are then employed as feedback resonators and single mode DBR lasers with side mode suppressions better than 28 dB are demonstrated.
