A new correlation-calculation method using exclusive binarization technique is presented. The method is useful for correlation-based measurement of random pattern movement, especially for measurement using a system comprised of a single detector and a two-dimensional array detector. The efficiency of the method is examined and demonstrated using a simple simulation based on Gaussian statistics. When instrumental noise in the system is suppressed less than the fluctuation of observed light intensity, the exclusive binarization method with an optimized parameter yields better signal-to-noise ratio than a general correlation-calculation method. In other words, less number of data pair is enough for the binary method to reach the same signal-to-noise ratio of correlation-peak determination as the general method. The gain increases with suppression of the instrumental noise.
