The transient transmission through a photorefractive crystal in which the incident beam couples with its own Fresnel reflection is studied. The transmission declines due to the formation of a volume reflection grating with a response time inversely proportional to intensity. The rate of decline is rapid at first but becomes progressively slower as the intensity declines at the rear of the crystal. For Gaussian input profiles, the power transmission is dominated by the wings in the transient regime. Experimental results obtained using Fe-doped lithium niobate show good agreement with theoretical predictions until competing noise appears. Crown Copyright
