First the good news, for dedicated followers of fashion: after a long stretch of seasons when movement in trend and design came at a snail's pace if at all, real change is visibly taking place at last. Silmo 2002 indicated, OptiMunich has since confirmed that the pace is quickening. Secondly, more good news for the comfort-minded fashionista: movement is not back to the heavy plastic rims and ultra-deep eyeshapes of the 1980s, with which we have so often been threatened during the time of style stagnation. New frame offerings at OptiMunich especially hinted at a re-interpreted revival for one key element of 1980s frame styling, the low joint (more of that later) but the 2003 trend highlights something completely different. Rimless mountings and semi-rimless frames (including, but not limited to, Nylor and Supra-style designs) accounted for an estimated 18 - 20 per cent of everything new in frames at Silmo 2002; at OptiMunich 2003, these categories made up approaching 25 per cent of all new-season ophthalmic frame product.
