The vast majority of us are now environmentally conscious and the use of systems to help maintain the various ecosystems we live in are now virtually mandatory. This is particularly true of the need to conserve water supplies in many parts of the world. It is also necessary to ensure that any water that is discharged from a manufacturing system is not capable of harming the environment into which it is released. The systems used within optical laboratories are basically designed to cover three main areas: 1. The better use of coolant water, particularly for smoothing and polishing (fining), where the control of temperature and quality of the slurry can affect the quality of the finished lens. 2. The conservation of water used in the various processes. 3. The handling and discharge of waste coolant and its contents.
