Grunenplan is a small village in Lower Saxony, Germany, with a 260 year long tradition in glass making. Grunenplan, the name means 'green plains', is situated in a picturesque area of flat green fields bordered by forested hills. In the early 1700's the local nobility found the use of glass for the making of glass mirrors to be an excellent source of income. Glass mirrors were highly valued in those times. The local forest provided the raw materials for making the glass and the fuel to fire the glass furnaces. As the forest was cut down, glass making moved around the area, but Grunenplan remained as a centre for the manufacture of glass.
