O.R. pioneering researcher and educator Saul Gass lost his battle with cancer on March 17 at the age of 87 at his home in Potomac, Md., not far from the University of Maryland where he spent more than 25 years as a professor at the Robert H. Smith School of Business (sec "Saul Gass: O.R. pioneer, statesman and ambassador,"Arjang Assad, OR/MS Today, April 2013, pp. 14-16). The 25th president of ORSA (Operations Research Society of America, a predecessor of INFORMS), Saul had a tremendous impact on countless students, colleagues, INFORMS and the O.R.profession through his teaching, research, writing and wisdom. Following are brief anecdotes from Saul's family and friends, colleagues and acquaintances, recalling memorable moments spent with an extraordinary man: he could to make sure O.R. received proper representation,even under a merged organization.
