Studies on the Effect of Hexamethylene Tetramine on the Pulping of Whole Jute Plant

Pulping of whole jute plant was done at 170 deg in soda-HMTA liquor containing 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5% of HMTA (on o.d whole jute plant), the rate of delignification exceeding the soda alone. In optimum conditions, pulp yield was increased from 48.14% to 50.4%, while Kappa number decreased from 55.9 to 34.4. The percentage of #alpha#-cellulose and pentosan increased in all digestions by the addition of hexamethylene tetramine. The density, breaking length, burst factor and double fold number were slightly higher in soda-HMTA pulping than in soda pulping, while the addition of hexamethylene tetramine induced no remarkable effect on the tear factor and brightness.
