Alan M. Gewirtz, M.D. In Memoriam

It is with great sadness to announce the loss of our dear colleague, Dr. Alan Gewirtz. Alan was the C. Willard Robinson Professor of Medicine and Pathology at University of Pennsylvania, and headed the Hematologic Malignancy Program in the Abramson Cancer Center. He was an alumnus of Colgate College, SUNY Medical School at Buffalo, and the medicine residency program at Mount Sinai in New York. During his hematologyoncology fellowship at Yale, Alan developed a love affair with hematopoiesis that never ended. Alan was a faculty member at Temple University before moving to Penn, where he spent the last two decades. During his time here, Alan’s career flourished, focusing on the application of rationally designed methods to manipulate hematopoiesis. Alan was an early advocate of the use of interfering RNA oligonucleotides in stem cells and a pioneer in the field of therapeutic gene targeting. Alan had dedicated his career to the development of novel therapeutics for the treatment of leukemia.
