Conjunctival primary acquired melanosis and melanoma: tales, fairy tales, and facts.

In a recent issue of Clinics in Dermatology on the subject of melanoma, guest editor Jane M. Grant-Kels introduced the topic with a story from her residency in dermatology.1 She described a young man in his thirties, in perfect health, recently married and living a life of excitement with mountain climbing and skydiving, who became suddenly confused and gravely ill. His abdominal ascites was tapped and displayed black fluid, highly suspicious for metastatic melanoma. But from where? Later inspection of this semiconscious man revealed a neck scar from previous melanoma surgery hidden under his beard. This ill-fated man was dead 1 week later.
