The rationale for nutrition scoring systems to guidefood selection comes down to four considerations. First,diet quality is an overwhelmingly important determinantof health outcomes1–4 and diet is made up of the foodschosen. Second, the prevailing diet in the United Statesis a long way from recommendations, and thus a powerfuldrag on public health aspirations. Third, advice toeat more fruits and vegetables—or to “eat food, not toomuch, mostly plants”5—does not adequately address therange of common food choices consumers make and hasproven ineffective.6 Fourth, and finally, consumers areoverwhelmed by the complexities and competing messagesof the modern food supply, and thus forestalled ineven earnest attempts to identify andchoose more nutritious foods
