Psychosocial Issues for Families With Obese Youth

Pediatric obesity prevalence rates have increased at an alarming rate along with significant medical consequences. More recently, however, psychosocial factors have been identified as important to consider during obesity development. The etiology of pediatric obesity is considered multifactorial and successful prevention and treatment efforts will likely require systematic inquiry into multiple components, including psychosocial correlates. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview regarding the relationship between psychosocial functioning and pediatric obesity at the family, peer, and individual level. Throughout the review, clinical implications have been provided for primary care health providers.
