It is a strange combination to start with-a national wildlife area that is home to a number of endangered species,but also hosts military flybys and stray bullets,grazing cattle,and natural gas wells.Welcome to southeast Alberta's National Wildlife Area.To environmentalists,it represents 458 square kilometres of some of the least disrupted,unplowed grassland in Prairie Canada,a wind-swept landscape of coulees,sand hills,river breaks,and wetlands.It's a refuge to over 1,100 known species of plants,mammals,birds,reptiles,amphibians,and insects,14 of which are listed as species at risk in Canada.
