GEORGE MERCER DAWSON IS AN UNSUNG hero of Western Canada's oil and gas industry.A geologist for the North American Boundary Commission and then director of the Geological Survey of Canada during the late 1300s,Dawson is credited by oil industry historian Frank Dabbs with playing a role in every major oil discovery in western and northern Canada prior to the first world war.Dawson died in 1901,four years before Alberta and Saskatchewan officially became provinces in the Dominion of Canada.
