Tailings ponds have been the bane of the mined bitumen industry almost from the time Great Canadian Oil Sands went into production in 1967. For many years, the massive ponds were developed in obscurity, away from the prying eyes of the media and the public. Now, however, the ponds have grabbed the attention of everyone from environmentalists to regulators, and industry is tackling the problem on a broad front.
