The Ikea model of turning wood into value-added products for export is a compelling,if seemingly unreachable,goal for the Canadian forestry industry.Fortunately,Alberta's petroleum industry has faired better in striving towards this ideal.Historically,Alberta has done well in adding value to its stores of oil and gas.The petrochemical business is Alberta's highest value-added manufacturing industry and a key component of a national chemical manufacturing sector that generates sales of more than 13.5 billion annually,according to the Canadian Chemical Producers'Association.The province boasts the largest ethylene(the base petrochemical building block)plant in the world.
