DEALING WITH FOUR JURISDICTIONS HAVING stakes in one sub-basin while taking the huge financial risk of possibly never discovering a commercially viable hydrocarbon deposit has not deterred a consortium led by ConocoPhillips from exploring it.This is because the Laurentian Sub-basin,a trough-like slab of sea floor occupying 60,000 square kilometres of space between southern Newfoundland and northern Nova Scotia,is believed to contain more than 700 million barrels of oil and nine trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
