Axillary dissection in sentinel lymph node biopsy: History, technique, and indications [Du curage axillaire au ganglion sentinelle: historique, technique et indications]

Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a procedure for lymphatic staging in early breast cancer. In a valid SLNB procedure, axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) can be omitted in nodenegative caseswithout compromising patient safety. The SLNB technology has also dramatically improved the quality of life for women with breast cancer. This report details a brief history of SLNB, the main methods to identify sentinel node and how it was applied in the treatment of a breast cancer.
