摘要

BP's outgoing chief executive, Tony Hayward, defended his company's safety procedures and oil spill response plans in the North Sea Wednesday as UK members of parliament quizzed him over implications closer to home from the disastrous Macondo oil spill in the US Gulf. Hayward, who will step down as head of BP next month, said the spill was on a scale that the company had "never envisaged" and was “devastating to me personally." But he strongly denied that cost-cutting had played any part in the catastrophe, telling MPs that "safety is the first call on every dollar BP invests. Before we invest in anything, we invest in safety."
