Hike in Spill Tax Fails to Pass

US Senate Democrats failed Thursday to pass legislation that would have raised a tax that is used to finance the national oil spill liability fund to 49￠/barrel from its current level of 8￠. The 56-40 vote was four votes shy of the 60 necessary to pass the bill from the chamber. The increased tax would raise about $18.3 billion over 10 years for the fund.
