BBC is the operator of 108 coalbed methane wells in Wyoming's Powder River Basin. Adjacent to the BBC operations, BTU Western Resources has a coal mining operation. In February 2007, BTU files a license application with BLM to explore for coal in the Porcupine Field. The exploration license would allow BTU to drill small core holes into the coal bed in order to ascertain the potential reserves. The exploration license would not give BTU the right to mine the coal, which would only arise after the competitive bidding process is utilized.
