Canada has joined several other countries in laying claim to ownership of mineral rights at the North Pole. Canada recently asserted its claim to the United Nations in advance of filing a formal application to the U.N. Commission established to consider the issue of sovereignty. Canada is currently underway collecting data to prove its ownership. In 2007, Russia planted its flag at the North Pole, which started the flurry of expeditions to reinforce claims.
