Much has changed since oil was first discovered in Colorado near Canon City in 1860. The techniques and technology used to extract natural gas and oil from Colorado's energy-rich lands would not be recognized by those pioneers who were primarily concerned with providing Americans with the fuel necessary to power their kerosene lamps. They could never have guessed at the thousands of uses we now have for petroleum-from transportation fuel to home heating and the production of plastics. What has remained constant over the 150-year history of the oil and natural gas industry in Colorado, however, is the pioneering spirit that has made this state a major contributor to our nation's energy supply.
