The first substantial discovery of natural gas in New Mexico was made in 1921 in San Juan County, and the first royalty check paid to the state was $ 135 in 1924. But by 2008, oil and natural gas producers contributed $8.8 billion to New Mexico-a dramatic acceleration by the industry in 85 years.Today New Mexico has also grown to become fourth in the nation in gas production, fifth in proven gas reserves, and in oil production (161,000 barrels a day), and fourth in proven oil reserves (735 million barrels).
