Algeria: Plans by Algeria to invest at least $70 bn to extract gas through tracking will continue, despite nearly three months of demonstrations in and around the southern Algerian town of In Salah. Residents and environmentalists concerned about damage to the environment and contamination of the water table have been calling for a halt to further shale gas exploration since soon after the government announced the first successful test drill at the end of December. At one point demonstrations spread as far as the capital Algiers on the country's northern coast.
